System-Level Design Community Readership Grows by 33 Percent

SAN FRANCISCO, CA -- (Marketwire) -- 01/20/09 -- System-Level Design (SLD) -- www.sldcommunity.com -- a new online publication and portal, takes a radically new approach to providing deep insights for chip architects and engineers. Instead of pitching products, the publication focuses on issues encountered by the people who design and build them. These issues and their real-world solutions are communicated in unbiased and professionally written stories that provide the foundation for a free exchange of ideas.

SLD was created by chip architects, engineers and journalists to help simplify the increasingly complex task of designing, developing and covering today's system-level semiconductor technologies. SLD consists of a monthly newsletter, weekly supplements, videos, independent research and roundtable discussions, and a platform for answering questions and commenting on deep technology issues. It is the result of months of interviews with hundreds of engineers about what kind of information is needed and how it should be delivered.

"This is a great opportunity for us to provide unbiased, marketing-free content and build a real community for system-level engineers and architects," said Ed Sperling, SLD's editor in chief. "We asked a lot of questions and talked to a lot of people. What we've done is create a business model that allows engineers to get exactly what they want, in the format they want, without the hype they've been complaining about. And we can deliver it on a regular schedule with professionally written and researched stories."

SLD is based on a new publishing model, developed jointly by Sperling Media Group and Extension Media, which utilizes sponsorships instead of advertising and replaces product pitches and press releases with user-focused issues. It takes advantage of Web 2.0 exchanges without sacrificing professionalism and independence. The site is dedicated to providing editorially independent information written by experienced and respected editors covering the EDA and semiconductor supply chain industries.

The publication and forums will be hosted by Extension Media, which has a proven track record of building publications for chip and board engineers. "We have a large and growing readership base, in part because we continue to innovate with new online business models like the portal which combine meaningful content delivered via editor-written articles, interactive commentary, blogs, videos, podcasts, polls, twitter, webcast and more. Our primary goal, as always, is to provide a variety of resources to help engineers solve complex chip -- EDA and semiconductor -- problems," said John Blyler, consulting editor at SLD and Editorial Director at Extension Media.

About Sperling Media Group LLC

Sperling Media Group LLC was formed to provide a free flow of unbiased information about technology and business issues in narrow but highly important markets where advertising revenue will no longer sustain it. At a time when complexity is at its peak and real insight is essential, the number of independent sources for that information is shrinking. SMG's model is to provide readers with exactly the kind of information they want, in the format and frequency of their choice and to create a community where ideas can be exchanged freely without an endless barrage of product pitches and marketing.
